Rape and Sex Crimes

Paper Summary:

This paper briefly examines the literature concerning psychopathic sexual offenders and how they are driven by violence, impulsivity, opportunity, and a blatant intolerance of others. It focuses mainly on the article "Sexual Offending and the Antisocial Personality: Exploring the Link" by P. V. Greenall. The paper looks at how some psychopathic sexual offenders are motivated and increasingly triggered by fantasies and how characteristics common to all sex offenders include a peculiar and chronic unstable and antisocial lifestyle with heightened aggression. The paper also discusses how another commonality is childhood experiences often characterized by severe forms of physical and sexual abuse.

"Not all psychopathic sex offenders attack in the same manner. Beauregard, Lussier, and Proulx (2005) differentiate rapists from sexually sadistic predators stating the latter take significant time to plot an attack and are isolative in nature. Rapists, on the other hand, are primarily impulsive opportunists, and more socially hostile and aggressive. A sex offender's decision to commit a sexual crime is determined by factors such as substance use, anger, mental instability, victim resistance, inexperience of the offender, and risk of getting caught (Greenall, 2007; Beauregard, Lussier, & Proulx, 2005)."
